Historical Background
These tags were made to fit various occupations for which slaves were hired out by their owners, and were evidence that the proper tax had been paid. “Servant” is the most frequently seen occupation; “porter,” “fisher,” “mechanic,” and the very rare “carpenter” are among the others. Accompanied by vol. xxvii, #6 of “North South Trader’s Civil War” with an article on collecting slave tags.

Flaw in stamping ‘A’ in “Servant”, overall fine condition.
