Historical Background
Thesenewspapers reflect pro-Union sentiment in the heart of Dixie. Needless to say, they were not produced by local printers, but by the Federal occupying forces. Apart from news reports on the war, they reprint various letters, proclamations and advertisements, including the announcement of the grand opening of a new tavern in Beaufort, aptly named “LINCOLN HOUSE.” Rare in and of themselves, these newspapers represent the nascent reconstruction of the South.
