Historical Background

This broadside captures the essential optimism and forward-looking vision of the Republican Party during Abraham Lincoln’s reelection campaign in 1864. Through graphs and diagrams, it provides evidence on population expansion, debt, and other financial indices with comparisons to Britain to make the argument that Republican management of the Civil War has not “ruined the country” and to counter the arguments of Copperhead Democrats:

“Our prosperity has continued to increase in spite of the War and the moment it has ended we shall go ahead in Wealth and power with rapidity hitherto unknown to any nation on the face of the globe. Is Not Such a Nation Able To Carry On a War For Its Own Salvation?”
