Large engraved map with contemporary outline coloring, on 4 sheets joined to approx. 47 x 43 in. With elaborate figural title cartouche of a Native American family group, additional cartouche and inset maps of Baffin & Hudson’s Bay. Based on Bowen & Gibson’s 1755 Treaty of Paris map detailing the end of the French and Indian War. Several articles of the treaty are engraved in the map’s blank ocean areas.
Although the map shows an extensive “Sea of California,” the inset map of California notes, “The Passage by Land to California, Discover’d by Father Eusebius Francis Kino a Jesuit, between the Years 1698 and 1701, before which, and for a Considerable Time Since California has always been described in all Charts and Maps as an Island.”
Phillips p. 589; Tooley The Mapping of America 49(f): “The eastern boundary of the Province of New York has been moved from the eastern shores of Lake Champlain and now runs along the Connecticut River. The title of N. Carolina has been inserted in two lines.”
