Inventory #20913.99       Price: $19,500

This atlas was first issued in 1841 and is basically an updated edition of Bradford’s An Illustrated Atlas of the United States (originally published in 1838) with extensive additions.  The maps include two hemisphere maps, a general map of North America, two maps of Canada, a double-page map of the United States, 29 maps of States, including Texas, a map of the Caribbean islands, five city-plans of eight U.S. cities (Washington, New Orleans, Louisville and Cincinnati on one sheet, and single sheet plans of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore).  Unlike many atlases of the period, the present work includes extensive text (218 p. total).  In pages 1-170 each engraving is accompanied by explanatory articles on the history, economics and geography of the area, as well as a great deal of contemporary statistical information.  Pages 171-218 are sub-titled “Supplement to Bradford’s Illustrated Atlas of the United States and adjacent countries... bringing down events to 1841”

There are several pages of text on Maryland, including two paragraphs describing Annapolis and a chart of the first Maryland proprietors through current state governors.  In addition to a map of Maryland, a single-sheet city plan of Baltimore is included. Annapolis is given some prominence, as it shows up on both the Maryland and the U.S. maps. The supplement lists a variety of national and state statistics.
