Historical Background

This photograph was taken at the White House on October 8, 1981. Former Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter had arrived by helicopter on the South Lawn at 6:52 pm and were greeted by President Reagan. He met with his three predecessors for about half an hour before they left at 7:47 pm for Andrews Air Force Base to board a plane for the 12-hour flight to Cairo, Egypt. Ford, Carter, and Nixon attended the funeral of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, who had been assassinated two days earlier on October 6. President Reagan, who had survived his own assassination attempt just six months earlier, decided that the risk was too great for him to attend Sadat’s funeral. Instead, the three former presidents, including Carter, who had brokered peace between Sadat and Israel’s Menachem Begin, served as the American delegation.

This photograph represents the first time four U.S. Presidents met together in the White House as well as the first time four U.S. Presidents were photographed together.

Very fine.
