Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was an English social theorist, novelist, and essayist. She was one of the few Victorian women to support herself solely by writing, and she covered topics of sociology, religion, women’s domestic life, position in the social hierarchy, and most controversially, feminine sexual identity.
