John M. Clark (1821-1902) was the recently elected Suffolk County Sheriff and organizer of the Convention. The Worcester Convention had been preceded by unsuccessful 1854-1855 efforts to overcome the bitter rivalry of the Massachusetts Know-Nothing and Free Soil Parties into a single anti-slavery movement.
